SADM SCHOLARSHIPS

SADM provides the opportunity for members and their students to apply for several types of scholarship assistance. Click on the links below to find out more about the scholarships available and how to apply for them.




UNITY/Curtain Call Scholarship

SADM is proud to partner with Curtain Call and UNITY to award a $500 scholarship to a studio owner to be used as an investment in the studio business or to further his/her dance education. To apply for the scholarship, interested parties must be a member of SADM in good standing and own his/her own studio.

Applicants should submit applications by May 1 for consideration for that year's award. The application consists of your contact information and a brief (100 words or less) explanation of how you plan to use the scholarship award.

Memorial Scholarships

One of the purposes of SADM is to encourage the development of excellence in dance education. With this goal in mind, scholarships are offered each year to deserving assistant teachers of members in memory of Marjorie Duckett, Joyce Newman, and Rockie Smith, and Frances Hickman.

  • Joyce Newman Scholarship
    Joyce Newman served as President of SADM from 1972-1975. She was also a charter member and is greatly missed by all members of our association.

  • Marjorie Duckett Scholarship
    Majorie Duckett was a co-founder of SADM and served as President from 1962-1965. She devoted her energy and enthusiasm toward raising the standard of the dance profession in the South.

  • Rockie Smith Scholarship
    Rockie Smith was a charter member of SADM and served as Secretary, Treasurer and Principal. Her eloquent style and presence will always be remembered.

  • Frances Hickman Scholarship

Applicants should submit applications by May 1 for consideration for that year's award. The application is completed by both the applicant and the sponsoring teacher. The application consists of personal contact information, a letter requesting the Memorial Scholarship, and a teacher/sponsor affirmation. The letter should include the applicant’s experience in dance, why the applicant would deserve this scholarship, and a clear definition of the applicant’s future goals in dance.

College Scholarship

The Southern Association of Dance Masters will award a $500 scholarship to one student who is or plans to be a dance major or minor in college. To be considered for this scholarship, students must be a member of SADM in good standing and be accepted and enrolled as a full-time student with dance as major or minor.

Applicants should submit applications by May 1 for consideration for that year's award. The application consists of the following:

  • College Scholarship Application
  • Personal letter of interest stating why you have chosen the field of dance and a brief description of your previous training
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from current or previous dance instructors
  • A DVD of one to one and half minutes of dance performance
